The brothers of Sigma Phi Epsilon helped celebrate Dr. Seuss’s Birthday with the national reading event Read Across America. On March 2, several SigEp brothers, along with a few Zeta Tau Alpha sisters visited the Northwest Headstart school for children ages 3 to 5. Tom Eagen dressed as the famous Cat in the Hat and assisted with the reading of several Dr. Seuss books.

Michael Johnson stated, “The brothers always have a good time at these events because we fell like we’re giving something back to the community. What makes it so awesome is that we get to do this while wearing outlandish top hats and the Cat in the Hat costume while reading such classics as “One Fish Two Fish, Red Fish Blue Fish” and “Wacky Wednesday.”
The annual event began 1998 when the National Education Association (NEA) decided to launch the national campaign to help children get excited about reading.
Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity at Dartmouth College.
Geisel’s contributions as an author have been recognized for many years. He made his first sale the Saturday Evening Post after sending his work to several magazines. He later traveled to New York to work with the staff of the humor magazine, Judge. The name Dr. Seuss came from Geisel’s mother’s maiden name and his own middle name. Seuss was born on March 2, 1904 in Springfield, Mass.
The brothers of Sigma Phi Epsilon plan on sharing Dr. Seuss’s works with more children in the future.
