Tennessee Kappa raises the bar for chapter academic standards

The Sigma Phi Epsilon chapter at the University of Tennessee at Martin voted unanimously during Sunday night’s chapter meeting to raise the GPA requirement for its members.

In the past, the minimum GPA requirement of its members has been a 2.25. After Sunday’s vote, the chapter’s minimum GPA requirement of its members is a 2.50, with all striving to maintain a GPA at or above 3.15 on a 4.0 scale.

The legislation to raise the requirement was drafted and sponsored by Vice President of Member Development, Kevin Teets.

“By raising the GPA requirement of our members we are able to show that our fraternity stands for academic success. This is also a positive step towards our chapter goal of becoming a member of the elite Phi Beta Kappa Wheelhouse,” Teets said.

SigEp’s chapter GPA average has consistently been higher than that of the all male average. SigEp and its closest academic competitor have competed each semester for first place performance among the fraternities at UT Martin.

Fraternity President Ryan Hartley says he is glad the chapter has made this decision.

“This semester the fraternity celebrates its 10th year of being chartered on the UT Martin campus. With this celebration comes an appreciation for the past but also a vision for the future. I am pleased that our chapter is able to raise the bar and continue promoting the Balanced Man Ideals of a Sound Mind and Sound Body.”

The hallmark of a collegiate education and a source of pride, academic performance and scholastic achievement are signs of Sound Minds at work. Reinforcing the value of education and its importance, Sigma Phi Epsilon Tennessee Kappa’s goal is to lead in campus academics.
