The 2004 Executive Committee retreats for Tennessee Kappa took on a new style this year, producing favorable results.
Coordinated by Tennessee Kappa alumnus Lowe Finney, leaders from SigEp chapters of Murray State, Lambuth University and the University of Tennessee at Martin convened in Jackson for a two-day retreat.
On the first night of the retreat, chapter members evaluated past year’s performance and listed the areas that went well and also critiqued areas that need improvement.
“When you guys go to Carlson, you will already be a step ahead in everyone else,” Chapter Counselor Steve Shanklin said. Shanklin and Finney along with TN Kappa alumni Chad Harrell and Ken Blankenship hosted discussion forums about the different areas and challenges facing the SigEp chapters.
At the end of the retreat, chapters were instructed to identify the top five challenges that they faced and come up with three action plans for improvement. The opportunity to share ideas with other chapters was liked by all participants. At the end of the sessions, EC members exchanged contact information for future networking and communication.
This style of leadership retreat will continue in the years to come. Sigma Phi Epsilon offers a leadership continuum for both EC members and general members. This continuum consists of the New Member Camps, Carlson Leadership Academy, Ruck Leadership Academy, Conclave and Quest to Greece.
